Daniels started the 2021 season as Georgia’s starter, but missed time with injuries and eventually lost the starting job to Stetson Bennett, who led the Bulldogs to a national championship. On Apr. 13, 2022, Daniels transferred to West Virginia.
In 31 career college games played, Daniels has 6,947 passing yards and 45 touchdowns.
Daniels arrives at Rice as it begins its first season in the American Athletic Conference. Since 2005, Rice has been in Conference USA.
What this means for Rice
Rice head coach Mike Bloomgren has recruited Daniels for a long time, first when he was Stanford’s offensive coordinator and Daniels was in high school, and then again at Rice when Daniels moved around the country as a transfer. Rice has used five different quarterbacks over the last two years but is expected to return nearly its entire starting offense next year. Top receiver Luke McCaffrey (58 catches, 723 yards last year) is a weapon. The Owls are also set to bring in their highest-ranked recruiting class in the rankings era.
Rice went 5-7 this season but reached its first bowl game since 2014, and it was the first season with at least five wins since 2015. — Vannini
